Iraqi Christians safer under Saddam, Vatican official says
American policy has produced chaos in Iraq, and Christians are in greater danger than they were under Saddam Hussein, according to the Vatican's former "foreign minister."
Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, who served from 1990 to 2003 as the Vatican's Secretary for Relations with States-- the top foreign-policy official for the Holy See-- told 30 Giorni magazine that he had been right to speak out against American war plans in 2003. Today, he said, "the facts speak for themselves.
The net result of the conflict in Iraq, the French-born prelate said, has been a breakdown in public order, leading to a civil war between Muslim factions with Christians caught in the middle.
The cardinal's comments appear in the August issue of the Italian monthly.
In June of this year he was appointed to become secretary of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue; he will formally assume this new post in September.
George W. Bush = America's Supreme failure.
